Joe Ball

b) March 31, 1944 d) October 27, 2001 Millington, Tenn Joe Ball was model Lawman and Leader By Chris Conley Deputy Chief Joe Ball's colleagues at the Shelby County Sheriff's Department remembered him Sunday as the consummate lawman. Mr. Ball died Saturday of cancer at Methodist Health-Care-North. He was 57. "Joe was one of the best officers - reliable and de-pendable," said Ball's boss, Chief Deputy Don Wright. "He was not only a good detective; he was a good leader," Wright said. The 32 year veteran was particularly good at dealing with victims and their families, Wright said. Before being promoted to deputy chief this month, Mr. Ball was chief inspector. Before that he was commander of the detective division. "There wasn't anyone in the department who didn't like him," said Insp. Carl Herring, Ball's longtime friend and the man who replaced him as commander of detectives. "He was very good (as a detective), very thorough, very professional," Herring said. "You couldn't ask for a better friend." "Lisa Ball, his wife of 23 years said, "He felt like he could make a difference in people's lives, especially young people." Mr. Ball grew up in Florida, where he was a football and baseball athlete. He served in the Navy in the Vietnam War during the late 1960s. Mr. Ball also was deeply involved in raising money for the department's adopted school, Klondyke Elementary School in North Memphis, and many other charities. Last year the department presented $5,000 to the school, money raised through the annual A.C. Gillis Charity Golf Tournament. Mr. Ball was a member of Liberty Free Will Baptist Church. Other survivors include daughter Rhonda Jordan of Oakland, Tenn.; two sons, Joe Ball Jr. and Brian Ball, both of Memphis, and eight grand- children. Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Memorial Park Funeral Home, with burial at Northdirge Woodhaven Funeral Chapel & Cemetery in Millington. Memorial Park Funeral Home has charge. The family requests that any memorial be sent to the American Cancer Society.
